Steps to acid wash a pool:
- Make sure you pull the plug in the bottom main drain. You do this so the pool doesn't pop out of the ground. Better to have dirty water come up into the pool.
- This brush, with handle (purchased separately) works great for acid washing a pool.
- The strength of acid depends on how dirty the pool surface. For the most part, use the weakest solution that does the job.
- Add about 2 gallons of water to a 5 gallon pail. Pour 1 gallon of acid into the pail. Always add the chemical to water, never water to the chemical.
- Be careful not to breath the acid fumes.
- Have a hose with spray nozzle ready.
- Start brushing in the shallow end, brush the walls till clean, then rinse thoroughly. Only work on a 5' x 5' section at a time.
- Pump the acid water solution where you can legally dispose of it.
Note: A bit more dangerous, but a better solution is to add soda ash to the bottom of the pool. You must be careful because this produces a very (very) toxic gas cloud, but it does neutralize the acid solution.
